A mixture of 800 mg of (racemic)-1-[4-[3-(acetyloxy)-1-pyrrolidinyl]-2-butynyl]-2-pyrrolidinone, 595 mg of of sodium carbonate and 40 ml of methanol was stirred overnight. An equal volume of dichloromethane was added and this mixture was filtered. The filtrate was concentrated and the residue was diluted with dichloromethane, filtered and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by chromatography (alumina), giving 470 mg of the desired product as a pale yellow oil.
