Procedure

To a solution of solution of 4-fluorophenylmagnesium bromide (prepared from 6.43 ml of 4-fluorobromobenzene and 1.71 g of Mg in 50 ml of ether) at room temperature under argon was added dropwise over 40 minutes a solution of 1-indanone (6.61 g, 50 mmole) in dry ether (20 ml). After stirring at room temperature for 1 hour, the reaction was quenched by the dropwise addition of saturated NH4Cl solution (15 ml). The mixture was diluted with Et2O, washed with saturated NaCl solution, dried (MgSO4) and evaporated.
