To a suspension of 6.8 g. of 2-aminoimidazole hydrochloride in 100 ml. of pyridine at -20°C. there is added 6.8 ml. of benzoyl chloride. The thus-obtained reaction mixture is allowed to warm slowly to between 20°-30°C. (room temperature), and maintained at this temperature for 12 hours, diluted with water and filtered to give a residue which is recrystallized from methanol to yield 2-phenylcarbonylaminoimidazole [(III), R = phenyl].
