Procedure

To 500 ml. of 50% aqueous sulphuric acid acid cooled between -5° and 0° were added dropwise 75 g. of transepoxyocimene prepared according to the description of paragraph (a) above. The mixture was vigorously stirred for one hour wile the temperature was allowed to slowly rise to 20-25°. It was extracted with methylene chloride, the extract was washed several times with water, with a saturated aqueous solution of sodium carbonate and finally with water. The extract was dried, concentrated and distilled. Thus secondary trans-ocimenol was obtained with a yield of 70-80%.
