Procedure
3,5-Diphenyl-1-methyl-4-n-propoxypyrazole (2.77 g, 0.0095 mole) in molecular sieve dried toluene (80 ml) is heated to 50°C and dimethyl sulfate (2.5 g, 0.02 mole) is added. The mixture is stirred and heated under reflux for 6 hours, cooled and set aside overnight. The reaction mixture is then extracted with water, the water layer evaporated to dryness under vacuum to afford the title compound as a hygroscopic solid in 96% yield.
