Reaction Steps
A mixture of 3-phenyl-2-furancarboxylic acid, methyl ester (4 g), paraformaldehyde (0.87 g) and zinc chloride (0.74 g) in chloroform (5 ml) was treated with hydrogen chloride gas for 21/2 hours. The mixture was poured onto saturated brine (100 ml) and extracted with chloroform (100 ml). The chloroform extracts were dried over sodium sulphate and the solvent evaporated in vacuo. The residue was distilled (Kugelrohr) affording the title compound (3.1 g) as an oil, b.p. 130°-140° C./10-1 mmHg.
