Methyl 3-[piperid-4-yl]propionate (11 g) and acetic anhydride (35 ml) were heated together on a steam bath for 1 hour. The mixture was cooled and methanol (50 ml) was added to destroy excess anhydride. The solution was evaporated to dryness in vacuo and the residue was partitioned between chloroform (200 ml) and 2 N hydrochloric acid (100 ml) dried (Na2CO3) and evaporated to give methyl 3-[1-acetyl-piperid-4-yl]propionate (13 g) as an oil.
