Procedure

A mixture of 3 g of 7-hydroxy-4-oxo-2-(trifluoromethyl)-4H-1-benzopyran-3-carbonitrile, 4 ml of conc. sulfuric acid and 1 ml of water was heated for 11/2 hours at an internal temperature of 120°-135°C. The clear dark solution was poured onto ice. The solid was filtered and recrystallized from methanol, mp > 310° C.
