Reaction Steps
A mixture of 19.5 g (0.048 mole) of N-ethyl-3,6-bis(4-chlorobutyryl)carbazole, 34.0 g (0.4 mole) of piperidine and 2.0 g of potassium iodide in 250 ml of p-dioxane is heated at reflux for 68 hours with stirring, then filtered. Upon cooling, the mixture is diluted with 500 ml of water, and the resulting semi-solid is dissolved in ether, washed repeatedly with water and dried over magnesium sulfate. The ethereal solution is treated with ethereal HCl to give N-ethyl-3,6-bis(4-piperidinobutyryl)carbazole dihydrochloride hemihydrate, which is recrystallized from methanol-ethyl acetate, M.P. 138°-142°C.
