Procedure
A suspension of 3-(4-fluorobenzoyl)propionic acid (50 g) in nitric acid (d = 1.51, 500 ml) was stirred at -15°C for 30 minutes and poured into ice/water (2 1.). The precipitate was filtered off, washed with water and recrystallised from ethanol to give 3-(4-fluoro-3-nitrobenzoyl)-propionic acid (29.2g, 46%) as needles m.p. 136°C.
