Reaction Steps
A mixture of 2,3-dihydro-5-(2-methyleneisovaleryl)-6,7-dimethylbenzofuran-2-carboxylic acid (5.0 g.) and concentrated sulfuric acid (25.0 ml.) is heated at 57°C. for 6 hours then poured into ice water (300 ml.). The 4,5-dimethyl-6-oxo-7-isopropyl-1,2,7,8-tetrahydro-6H-indeno[5,4-b]furan-2-carboxylic acid which separates is filtered and dried.
