Reaction Steps
A mixture of 5-(2-methyleneisovaleryl)-6,7-dimethylbenzofuran-2-carboxylic acid (5 g.) and concentrated sulfuric acid (25 ml.) is heated at 57°C. for 6 hours and poured into ice water (300 ml.). The 4,5-dimethyl -6-oxo-7-isopropyl-7,8-dihydro-6H-indeno-[5,4-b]furan-2-carboxylic acid which separates is filtered and dried.
