15.3 gm (0.1 mol) of 1,4-diamino-2-nitrobenzene were heated to boiling in 150 ml of ethyl cyanoacetate. Simultaneously therewith the ethanol formed during the reaction was removed by distillation. After the reaction mixture was cooled, the precipitate formed was vacuum filtered, washed with ether and recrystallized from dilute acetic acid. The product had a melting point of 218°-221°C.
