15.3 gm (0.1 mol) of 1,4-diamino-2-nitrobenzene were heated in 50 ml of chlorobenzene together with 20 gm of acetoacetic acid ethyl ester, with the simultaneous distillation of ethanol, formed in the reaction. From the cold reaction mixture the precipitate was suctioned off, washed with dilute methanol and recrystallized from dilute acetic acid. The product had a melting point of 146°-147°C.
