Reaction Steps

A mixture of 1,5-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)pentan-3-one of Example 7 (57 g, 0.19 mole), amalgamated zinc (200 g), dioxane (250 ml), concentrated hydrocloric acid (250 ml) and 150 ml of water was refluxed overnight. A further 50 ml of concentrated hydrochloric acid was added after the first 6 hours. The organic layer was separated, diluted with ether, washed with water, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated to give 60 g of a thick oil. NMR and mass spectra confirmed the structure.
