Procedure

3.0 g of methyl 2-(1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2,2-dimethylquinolin-6-yl)propionate (Compound 11) were added to 30 ml of pyridine, and 2.6 g of benzoyl chloride was further added to the solution. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 15 hours, followed by addition of ice-water and extraction with ether. The ethereal solution was washed with 10% hydrochloric acid, water and saturated aqueous solution of sodium chloride, and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. Ether was distilled off to give 3.9 g of methyl 2-(1-benzoyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2,2-dimethylquinolin-6-yl)propionate (Compound 17).
