The title compound was prepared as described in General Method 2 using 0.05 mol of benzyl chloride, 0.05 moles of potassium thiotosylate in 150 mL of ethanol. The residue was dissolved in hexane and seeded with a crystal of the product to afford 10.8 g (77%) of benzyl-p-toluenethiosulfonate (m.p. 52-56.5° C.). 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ 2.45 (s, 3 H), 4.26 (s, 2 H), 7.18-7.30 (m, 7 H), 7.74 (d, 2 H).
