Procedure

To a solution of compound 3 (11.7 g, 20.37 mmol) in MeOH (300 ml), NaOMe (4.2 ml of a methanolic 25% w/v solution) was added and the solution was stirred until the reaction was complete. The solvent was then evaporated and the residue was dissolved in H2O (200 ml), washed with ether and neutralized with Dowex 50 ion exchange resin. After filtration of the resin, the aqueous solution was evaporated to give compound 4 (4.92 g, 92% yield) as a white foam.
