A mixture of N-(1-ethylpyrazol-5-yl)-4-nitroanthranilic acid (3.4 g, 12.32 mmol) and POCl3 (20 ml) is refluxed for 8 hours. The reaction mixture is poured into ice waterl, neutralized with concentrated NH4OH, and the resulting solid is collected by filtration,washed with water and dried to afford 2.8 g (82%) of 1-ethyl-4-chloro-7-nitro-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]quinoline.
