1.3 ml of nitric acid (65%) were cautiously added dropwise at 0° C. to 5.1 ml of acetic anhydride. The solution was added to a solution of 3.00 g of 2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1,3,3,5-tetramethyl-2,4-dioxo-1H-1,5-benzodiazepine in 6.5 ml of acetic anhydride and 2.1 ml of glacial acetic acid. The reaction mixture was left to stand at room temperature for 3 days, filtered, the residue was washed thoroughly with water, dried and recrystallized from ethanol. There were obtained 2.11 g of 2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1,3,3,5-tetramethyl-7-nitro-2,4-dioxo-1H-1,5-benzodiazepine, m.p. 224°-225° C.
