Procedure
A solution of 4-phenyl-2-oxo-3-cyclohexene-1-acetic acid (Tet. Lett. 1968, 4739) (10.0 g, 43.4 mmol) in Et2O (150 ml) was treated with ethereal diazomethane at 0° C. until TLC indicated the reaction to be complete. The solvent was evaporated to yield methyl 4-phenyl-2-oxo-3-cyclohexene-1-acetate (10.6 g, quant.): Rf 0.33 (20% EtOAc in hexane);
