A stirred solution of 2.0 grams (0.005 mole of 1-cyclopropyl-1-(4-chlorophenyl)-4-(4-fluoro-3-phenoxyphenyl)butane and 0.9 gram (0.005 mole) of N-bromosuccinimide in 50 mL of carbon tetrachloride was irradiated for 2 hours with a sun lamp. The reaction mixture was cooled and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure, yielding 2.1 grams of 1-cyclopropyl-1-(4-chlorophenyl)-4-bromo-4-(4-fluoro-3-phenoxyphenyl)butane. The nmr spectrum was consistent with the proposed structure.
