Procedure

A solution of 73.4 g of 2-(2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl)ethylene oxide in 400 ml of aqueous ammonia (25% strength) is heated for 4 hours to 130° C. in an autoclave. The slightly yellowish solution is evaporated to dryness under vacuum. The residue crystallizes. Recrystallization from ethanol/ether yields 2-amino-1-(2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl)ethanol, mp 94°-96° C.
