A solution of diazomethane in diethyl ether was added to a solution of (-)-2-(3-benzyloxy-5-fluorophenyl)-2-hydroxybutyric acid (2.24 g) in diethyl ether (35 ml) until the reaction mixture retained a yellow colouration. The mixture was evaporated to give optically active methyl 2-(3-benzyloxy-5-fluorophenyl)-2-hydroxybutyrate (2.27 g).
