8-Fluoro-1,2,3,9-tetrahydro-9-methyl-3-[(5-methyl-1H-imidazol-4-yl)methyl]-4H -carbazol-4-one (1.51 g) was dissolved in ethyl acetate (40 ml), and added to a solution of maleic acid (563 mg) in ethanol (50 ml). The solution was cooled to 0°, and the resultant solid was filtered off and dried in vacuo to give the title compound (1.61 g), m.p. 155°-158°, t.l.c. (System A 100:8:1), Rf 0.43.
