Procedure
To a stirred solution of (3-cyclobutyloxetan-3-yl)methyl 4-iodobenzoate (7.42 g, 20 mmol) in dry dichloromethane (80 ml) at -70° C. under nitrogen atmosphere was added boron trifluoride etherate (2 ml). The solution was allowed to warm to room temperature, stirred overnight and then quenched with dry triethylamine (3 ml). The mixture was evaporated to dryness, partitioned between water and dichloromethane and the organic layer was separated, dried over anhydrous potassium carbonate and evaporated. The residue was chromatographed on basic alumina. Elution with hexane: dichloromethane (9:1 v/v) gave 4-cyclobutyl-1-(4-iodophenyl)-2,6,7-trioxabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (2.8 g, 38%) as white crystals.
