Procedure
To a stirred solution of 2-cyclobutyl-2-hydroxymethylpropane-1,3-diol (10 g, 62.5 mmol) and pyridine (21 ml, 0.25 mol) in dry chloroform (200 ml) at 0° C. under nitrogen atmosphere was added methanesulphonyl chloride (25 g, 18 ml, 0.22 mmol). The solution was stirred overnight, poured into ice/water and extracted with chloroform. The extracts were dried over anhydrous magnesium sulphate. Evaporation afforded 2-cyclobutyl-2-hydroxymethyl-propane-1,3-diol trimethanesulphonate which was not purified further. Nmr δ 4.20[6H, s], 3.05[9H,s], 2.60[1H, m], 2.10-1.70 [6H,m].
