A solution of 560 mg (258 mmole) of 3,4-dihydrospiro-[(2H)-1-benzopyran-2,3'-piperidine]4-one in 20 mL ethanol was treated with 880 mg (3 mmoles) of 2-(4-methanesulfonamidophenyl)ethyl mesylate and 0.5 g sodium bicarbonate and heated to reflux for 48 hours. The reaction was cooled to room temperature, poured into saturated sodium bicarbonate and extracted with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate solution was dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated in vacuo. The crude material was treated with 1 eq. oxalic acid and the salt was recrystallized from acetone to give product with mp=204°-210° C.
