A method similar to that used for the preparation of (99a) was used except that the reaction product was passed through a Dowex ion exchange resin 50×2-200 and 4-bromo-2-thiphenecarboxaldehyde (955 mg) was used as the aldehyde component to afford the desired product (1.52 g ). 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 3.79 (s, 3H), 5.24 (s, 2H), 5.99 (br., 1H), 7.20-7.37 (m, 7H), 7.67 (s, 1H).
