To a solution of 3-ethyl-1-(3-hydroxy-propyl)-3-(3-methoxy-phenyl)-azepan-2-one (as described above in Step B) (0.12 g, 0.393 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (20 mL) at −78° C. was added BBr3 (1M, 0.786 mL, 0.786 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred for 3 hr at 25° C. then quenched with H2O and extracted with EtOAc. The organic layer was separated, washed with brine and dried (MgSO4). Filtration and concentration to dryness gave the title compound after purification by preparative RP HPLC.
