mCPBA (2.86 g; 70%) was added to a stirred solution of 4-acetoxy-4-(p-cyanophenyl)-1-butene (2.5 g; 11.6 mmol; from step (a) above) in DCM (20 mL), and the reaction mixture was refluxed for 3 h and then cooled. The m-chlorobenzoic acid was removed by filtration and the filtrate was washed with NaHCO3 (aq.), then with water, the phases were separated, dried, concentrated and purified by column chromatography (DCM) to give the sub-title compound in a 50% yield.
