Procedure
Ester 7-3 (1.07 g, 2.64 mmol) was dissolved in 26 mL MeOH, then treated with 1 N NaOH (6.6 mL, 6.6 mmol). After stirring overnight the reaction was concentrated, redissolved in water, the pH was, adjusted to 1 with 10% KHSO4, then extracted with EtOAc (5×). The aqueous phase was adjusted to pH 3 with aq. NaOH, then reextracted with EtOAc (2×). The combined organic phases were washed with brine, dried (MgSO4), filtered and concentrated, providing 7-4 as a white foam.
