Reaction Steps

A mixture of 5 g (0.012 mol) of lovastatin, 6 ml (0.052 mol) of cyclohexylamine and 50 ml of toluene was refluxed for 6 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature and 20 ml of ethylacetate was added. The mixture was washed with 2N HCl (2×30 ml) and water (2×20 ml). The organic layer was dried with sodium sulfate, filtered and evaporated to a volume of 15 ml. 50 ml of hexane was added and the precipitate was filtered to give 5.5 g of lovastatin cyclohexanamide as a white powder.
