Procedure

To 2.25 g of 5-[(2-methylphenyl)sulfonylamino]-4,5,6,7-tetrahydrobenzo[b]thiophene and 1.61 g of succinic anhydride suspended in 25 ml of dichloroethane was added 4.39 g of anhydrous aluminum chloride under ice cooling, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 hours. The reaction mixture was poured into ice water and extracted with ethyl acetate. After the resulting organic layer was washed and dried, the solvent was removed to obtain 3.47 g of 2-(3-carboxypropionyl)-5-[(2-methylphenyl)sulfonylamino]-4,5,6,7-tetrahydrobenzo[b]thiophene.
