Procedure
To a solution of 55 mg (0.19 mmol) of N-(4-methylphenyl)-N-(3-methoxyphenyl)-3,3-dimethylacrylamide (Compound 16) in 2.0 mL of trichloroethane stirring under argon, was added 0.11 g (0.84 mmol) of aluminum chloride and the mixture was heated at 90°-100° C. for 18 hours. The reaction was cooled, poured onto ice, the mixture extracted with diethyl ether (2x) dried (MgSO4), filtered and concentrated in vacuo to give an oil. The mixture was purified by flash chromatography (30% ethyl acetate in hexanes) to give the title compound as a white solid (4.0 mg). PNMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) d 1.37 (6 H, s), 2.41 (3 H, s), 2.65 (2 H, s), 4.76 (1 H, s), 5.92 (1 H, d, J=2.6 Hz), 6.49 (1 H, rid, J=8.3, 2.6 Hz), 7.09 (2 H, d, J=8.1 Hz), 7.17 (1 H, d, J=8.3 Hz), 7.30 (2 H, d, J=8.1 Hz).
