Procedure
A mixture of 1-tert-butyl-3-methyl-5-amino-1H-pyrazole-4-carboxamide (1.0 g, 5.1 mmol), ethyl phenylacetate (1.67 g, 10.2 mmol), NaOCH3 (1.74 g, 31 mmol) and ethanol (50 mL) was refluxed for about 3 days. The reaction mixture was stripped to dryness and then the residue was treated with water and then acidified with acetic acid. The product was collected by filtration, washed with water and dried to afford 0.53 g (35%) of 1-tert-butyl-3-methyl-6-(phenylmethyl)pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidin-4-one 1/5 hydrate, m.p. 196-197° C.
