Procedure

Following the procedure of Example 1, 3,3'-dimethoxybenzil (1.0 g, 3.69 mmol) and 2-guanidinobenzimidazole (540 mg, 3.08 mmol) in methanol (40 mL) was treated with a solution of sodium hydroxide (200 mg, 5 mmol) in 5 mL of water. The title compound was isolated as pale yellow crystals (655 mg, 73% yield). mp: 276-278 ° C. (dec);MS (ESI) m/z 585 [M+H]+.
