Reaction Steps

4.92 g of 2-benzyl 3-tert-butyl (2RS,3RS)-5-oxotetrahydrofuran-2,3-dicarboxylate in 50 ml of ethyl acetate was catalytically reduced with 500 mg of a 10% palladium-carbon catalyst at room temperature under atmospheric pressure of hydrogen for 3 hours. The catalyst was filtered off, and the filtrate was evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure to give 3.44 g of the title compound as a white solid.
