Reaction Steps
Sodium hydride (0.5 g, 12 mmol) in dry DMF (10 ml) was cooled to -5° C. and a solution of 4-(3,4-dimethoxyphenylthio)azetidin-2-one (3 g, 12 mmol) in dry DMF (20 ml) was added dropwise over 15 mins under a nitrogen atmosphere at -5° C. After 15 mins methylbromoacetate (2 g, 12 mmol) was added in one portion, and the mixture stirred for 30 mins at room temperature. The reaction mixture was carefully poured into brine/ice water and ethyl acetate (100 ml) was added. The organic layer was washed with brine (x2), dried (MgSO4) and evaporated to a yellow oil which was purified by flash column chromatography eluted with petroleum ether/ethyl acetate to give the product as a yellow oil (0.96 g, 25% yield).
