Reaction Steps

A 500 ml reaction flask is charged with 50 g (0.094 mole) of (CF3)2CF(CF2)6C2H4SH, 5.1 g (0.094 mole) of sodium methoxide and 100 ml of methanol. To this is slowly added glycidol while maintaining the temperature at 25°C with an ice bath. After addition is completed, the reaction mixture is stirred for 3 hours, and then there is added 150 ml of water and enough concentrated hydrochloric acid to neutralize the base. Extraction with 1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane and evaporation of solvent affords 53 g of (CF3)2CF(CF2)6C2H4SCH2CH(OH)CH2OH, m.p. 92°-95°.
