2β-(4'-Chloroacetoxy-n-butoxy)-3α-hydroxy-5α-pregnane-11,20-dione (380 mg.) was dissolved in methanol (40 ml.) and the stirred solution heated to 50°C. Perchloric acid (0.5 ml.) was added and the mixture stirred at 50°C for 5 hours. The mixture was neutralised with sodium bicarbonate solution, poured into water and extracted with ether (2 × 100 ml.). The combined extracts were washed with water (200 ml.), dried over anhydrous sodium sulphate and evaporated in vacuo to a white foam (270 mg.) which was purified by preparative tlc in acetone/petroleum ether 1/1 to give the title compound (170 mg.) [α]D + 79.5°
