Procedure

2α,3α-Epoxy-5α-pregnane-11,20-dione (500 mg.) was dissolved in glacial acetic acid (25 ml.), and the solution was heated on a steam-bath for 3 hours. Evaporation of the solution under reduced pressure gave an oil which was purified by preparative TLC in ethyl acetate-petrol, and foamed in vacuo to give the title compound as a white foam, [α]D + 93.5°.
