Procedure
25 g (85 mmol) of ethyl-5,6-dihydro-5,7-dimethyl-6-oxo-4H-imidazo[1,5-a][1,4]benzodiazepine-3-carboxylate was heated to boiling under reflux for 1 hour with 3.40 g (85 mmol) of sodium hydroxide in 200 ml of ethanol and 15 ml of water. After evaporation of the ethanol the residue was diluted with water and acidified with 21 ml of 4N hydrochloric acid. The suspension obtained was suction filtered and washed with water. By drying the filter cake there was obtained 5,6-dihydro-5,7-dimethyl-6-oxo-4H-imidazo[1,5-a][1,4]benzodiazepine-3-carboxylic acid of decomposition point 274°-275°.
