Procedure
A solution of 2-(p-methoxyphenethyl)-3-methyl-4-allyloxybenzofuran (0.9 gm, 2.8 mmoles) in ortho dichlorobenzene (15 mL) was refluxed for 4.5 hours under a nitrogen atmosphere. The mixture was cooled to room temperature and was chromatographed on silica gel. Elution with 15% ethylacetate in hexane yielded 0.6 gm (67%) of 2-(p-methoxyphenethyl)-3-methyl-4-hydroxy-5-allylbenzofuran.
