Procedure

1-(3-Phenylpropyl)-4-benzyl-2-hydroxy-6-oxopiperazine (2.6 g) and polyphosphoric acid (53 g) were mixed, heated at 180° C. and maintained at this temperature for 3/4 h. The mixture was cooled to 60° C. and water (200 ml) added. The mixture was cooled, basified with sodium hydroxide solution, and extracted with chloroform (3×50 ml). The solvent was evaporated and the product crystallised from diethyl ether to give the title compound (0.78 g, 32%) m.p. 125°-8° C.
