9.7 g of the product from step (b) was refluxed for 2 1/2 hours in 225 ml thionyl chloride. The mixture was concentrated in vacuo. The residue was triturated and concentrated in vacuo two times with toluene to yield a white solid which showed the expected carbonyl shift in the IR, indicative of an acid chloride.
