Procedure
29.4 g (0.1 mol) of 3-cyano-2,4,6-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid methyl ester are suspended in 300 ml of water. After addition of 35 ml of concentrated sodium hydroxide, the reaction mixture is heated at 60° C. until a clear solution is obtained. After filtration over active carbon, the solution is cooled and brought to pH 2 by dropwise addition of 50% concentrated hydrochloric acid. The mixture is stirred for 2 hours in an ice bath, after which the resultant precipitate is vacuum-filtered, washed with water and dried t 50° C., thus producing 25.4 g (85% of theory) of 3-carbamoyl-2,4,6-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid as a white powder, mp 261°-262° C.
