Procedure
A solution of ethyl 4-oxo-1-azabicyclo[3.3.1]non-3-yl carboxylate* (22 g, 0.104 moles) in ethanol (200 ml) was cooled in an ice bath to 5° C. and treated portionwise with sodium borohydride (4.0 g). The reaction was then allowed to warm to room temperature and stirred overnight. The solvent was then removed in vacuo, the residue partitioned between dichloromethane (200 ml) and water (75 ml) and the organic layer separated and dried (Na2SO4). Filtration and removal of the solvent afforded the required product as an oil (20.0 g), 85% pure by g.l.c. (OVl, 180° C.) which was used without further purification.
