Reaction Steps

13.4 ml (0.26 mol) of bromine are slowly added dropwise to a solution of 64.5 g (0.26 mol) of 4-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-3,3-dimethyl-2-butanone in 600 ml of chloroform at room temperature. The reaction solution is subsequently stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. It is then concentrated by distilling off the solvent. 84.3 g (100% of theory) of crude 1-bromo-4-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-3,3-dimethyl-2-butanone are obtained as an oil, which is further reacted directly. ##STR11##
