Reaction Steps
About 77.4 g (0.29 mol) of the chlorosilane described above were added dropwise to a suspension containing 3.2 g (0.084 mol) of LiAlH4 in 150 ml of absolute ether while stirring at 10°-30° C. over a period of 3 hours. Continuation of the reaction at room temperature for 4 hours was followed by cautious decomposition of the excess alanate with water, and the mixture was made basic with 10 ml of 5N NaOH and the phases were separated. After working up the ether phase, the distilled residue yielded 62.5 g (92.9% of theory) of 2,5,5,7,7-pentamethyl-2,5,7-trisilaoctane at 82°-83° C. under 134 Pa. C10H28Si3.
